Natural Resource Management Seminar Series: Ocean Diversity

University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science Natural Resource Management Seminar Series presents, "Using traditional and cutting-edge technologies to explore, understand, and support ocean biodiversity and conservation" with Molly Timmers, Marine Ecologist, Pristine Seas, National Geographic Society. The seminar will be held over zoom. All are welcome!

Abstract: The world’s oceans cover 70% of the surface and provide goods and services that are essential to human survival and well-being. However, the biodiversity and health of our seas is threatened by climate change, increasing resource exploitation, and pollution. With less than eight percent of the ocean having some form of preservation and less than three percent having full protection, increasing marine protection is fundamental and crucial to ensure a healthy ocean. The Pristine Seas project of National Geographic uses traditional and cutting-edge technologies to assess ocean biodiversity and to support ocean conservation. Working with local communities and world leaders, we have helped to inspire the creation of 26 marine reserves. I will present an overview of the Pristine Seas project, discuss field survey methods, provide recent examples of how the research is supporting conservation objectives, and touch upon future research directions.
