Research Seminar Series: Course-Based Undergraduate Research

Location: Zoom

University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science Graduate Program Research Seminar Series presents, "Aspects of course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) that improve student affective outcomes" with Katelyn Cooper, Assistant Professor, School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University, and Maya Munstermann, PhD student at Florida State University

Abstract: In course-based undergraduate research experiences or CUREs, students engage in real research in the context of a course. It has been well-established that CUREs lead to an array of benefits for undergraduates, but the specific aspects of CUREs responsible for these gains are unknown. In this seminar, we will discuss three studies addressing this gap in the literature. The first examines the impact of engaging with broadly relevant novel data on students in a CURE and the second explores the impact of analyzing data that students collect themselves, and the third assesses how students benefit from co-authoring publications stemming from a CURE. This work provides implications for purposefully integrating specific elements into CUREs in hopes of maximizing student outcomes.

All are welcome. Community members and undergraduates are encouraged to attend. Please feel free to invite your colleagues, students, and all interested undergraduate research experiences and maximizing student outcomes.
