`Ike Papalua -Mental Health and Leadership

Location: CC 301

The Ka Lama Ku Student Leadership Development Program, in collaboration with UH Hilo Student Health & Wellness Programs, presents the Mental Health & Leadership Workshop.

This workshop aligns with our Ka Lama Ku value ‘Ike Pāpālua - To have the gift of vision. Leaders often need to “navigate unknown waters'' and act upon situations and challenges that are beyond their expectations. They take risks that others would avoid, create change, and effectively communicate a shared vision for an organization.

The focus of this workshop is to build coping skills and awareness around the challenges that many leaders face with their mental health and ways to be proactive in building systems to support healthy mental health lifestyles.

We hope you join us on September 29, 2021 from 3:30p-4:30p in Campus Center room 301. We ask that you sign up as seating is limited to the first 20 students. However, we will allow walk-ins if space is available. Lite snacks will be provided.

We will have two special guest speakers, Ekaterina Kapoustina and Samantha (Sammy) Bailo.

Ekaterina Kapoustina is a Mental Health Counselor at UH Hilo Counseling Services. She came from Canada to study for her Master's in Counseling in 2018, and is currently working on her licensure! Ekaterina's interests involve working with individuals and couples through an interpersonal lens. She utilizes person-centered and emotionally focused therapy approaches. She loves providing workshops and education to the student populations around various topics related to mental health to reduce stigma.

Samantha (Sammy) Bailo is a second-year Counseling Psychology student at UH Hilo. Sammy takes a collaborative approach with students, inviting them to explore their family of origin, cultural identities, gender, and sexual orientation, and spiritual beliefs to form a positive sense of self.
Sammy has worked with a variety of young adults in therapeutic settings including horticulture therapy, case management, and at a rape crisis center providing advocacy and support. She is passionate about the power of a positive therapeutic alliance and is a big fan of experimenting with clients and hands-on expressive activities such as gardening and Sandplay. Sammy speaks fluent Tongan and some Spanish. She served in the Peace Corps from 2014-2017 in the Kingdom of Tonga.
