Pono Science, TCBES Research Seminar Series

Seminar title: Using Pono Science to Achieve an ʻĀina Momona

Speaker: Dr. Noelani Puniwai, Assistant Professor, Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, UH Mānoa

Abstract: We are naturalists and conservationists because we love this planet. We love our plant friends, our bird friends, our fish friends - our rock friends. We are scientists and managers because we want to aloha our environment. I started my journey into science to learn more about the places I love, and of course, to protect them. Yet I discovered that the lack of connection between humans and their land/seascapes is preventing us from nurturing healthy ecosystems. This realization helped me to begin a new type of research, to understand and study different ways of knowing in order to see how one's epistemology affects your science, research, and management, and how we can utilize that understanding to become effective at creating a thriving, abundant environment. This movement recognizes that science is cultural and political, and needs to be responsive — through participatory processes — to the diverse cultural values of the people it affects.

All are welcome. Community members and undergraduates are encouraged to attend. Please feel free to invite your colleagues, students, and all pono science enthusiasts.
