Ocean Processes, TCBES Research Seminar Series

Location: Online

Seminar topic: The Importance of Ocean Processes in Shaping Nearshore Marine Ecosystems in Hawai‘i

Speaker: Jamison Gove, Ph.D., Oceanographer, NOAA’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center

Abstract: In this presentation, Dr. Gove will highlight and discuss key ocean processes and the roles they play in shaping nearshore marine communities in Hawaiʻi—including his recent exploration of surface slicks in West Hawaiʻi, often seen but poorly understood ocean features that concentrate both larval fish and billions of tiny plastic particles on which those fish feed. This groundbreaking research was featured in the April 2019 issue of National Geographic Magazine and on the World Surf League’s PURE One Ocean podcast.

Dr. Jamison Gove is an Oceanographer with NOAA’s Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center in Honolulu. His research focuses on how ocean processes and human activities influence marine ecosystems, with a particular focus on coral reef ecosystems. Jamison leads the West Hawaiʻi Integrated Ecosystem Assessment, a program dedicated to conducting robust interdisciplinary research that addresses current and future resource management needs in West Hawaiʻi.
