The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii Marine Program: Connecting

Location: Wentworth 1

Speaker:

Rebecca Most, Acting Program Manager, Hawaiʻi Island Marine Program
The Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi

Abstract:
The Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi Marine Program focuses on community-based management initiatives throughout the state to build sustainable fisheries, improve resilience to climate change, and actively engage community with managers in conservation planning and implementation.

The Hawaiʻi Island Marine Program supports a wide range of projects, such as facilitating community networks (Kai Kuleana, Hui Loko, and South Kohala Coastal Partnership), providing scientific research and monitoring to guide management initiatives, and promote biocultural knowledge exchanges to ensure actions are culturally appropriate and effective locally.

Specific examples from West Hawaiʻi will include the Try Wait initiative of Ka’ūpūlehu, Kīholo Fishpond Restoration Project, and the success regional networks have had on empowering local communities in conservation, and a discussion on the conservation priorities of the future and opportunities to get involved.

All are welcome
