UH Hilo has been analyzing lava flow samples from Kīlauea since 2013 but the composition barely changed. Then came May 2018 and a dramatic change.
Kathryn Strong was awarded $2,000, and Amanda Alvarado, Kaylee DeCambra, Liesl Nayeli, and Kaimalie Zierker each received $1,000 awards.
The students will embark on their journey Sept. 9 from Hamburg, Germany, and disembark on Dec. 23 in San Diego, California. They will traverse 11 different countries and four different continents: Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America.
