Infographic showing Travel Time
Sept. 14, 2014. How much time are people spending in traffic today (as of 2008-2012, US. census) and here’s the result. With HI-130 being open and functional, most people (83%) have been spending less than one hour in their cars each way.

Infographic showing types of Households e.g. single mother, family, etc.
Sept 14, 2014. How about families? Among those 3,809 households (Census 2010), 2,129 were family households. There are are 476 single moms and 248 single dads.

Aerial showing drive times
Sept. 14, 2014. What would be the new commuting time if people in lower Puna had to use Chain of Craters road to go to Keaau/Hilo? This image shows approximate driving time between major intersections. Kimura used Google Maps estimates without traffic. (This is just a guideline.) According to this estimate, if a commuter lives in Pahoa, they would have to add one hour and 10 minutes to their current commuting time (again, without traffic). If a commuter lives in Kalapana, the difference would be 50 minutes. Again, this is traffic estimate without traffic. It will probably be much longer in reality.

Infographic showing numbers of students
Sept. 14, 2014. This image shows how many students live in the potentially affected area.

Map showing lava flow size and direction.
Sept. 14, 2014. Kimura digitized the lava flow map from USGS’s web site (Source: http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/maps/) and loaded it to Google Earth.

Infographic showing number of businesses (257) and employees (1,192)
Sept 14, 2014. Some statistics on business establishments in the potentially affected area. Kimura’s data sheet shows there are six hotels and lodging, seven education institutions and libraries, and six health services. It’s been pointed out in Facebook comments that the number of agricultural businesses is too low.
