For Immediate Release

Seventeen students from Hawaiʻi’s public, private and charter schools have been awarded the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Chancellor’s Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The scholarship is a prestigious four-year award for Hawaiʻi high school seniors who are ranked in the top 10 percent of their class and earn a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5. Up to 18 students are selected annually for the scholarship worth over $16,000. Recipients receive a full four-year tuition and are invited as well as encouraged to take part in honors classes, leadership and community service activities throughout their college careers.

The 2090-2010 recipients achieved near perfection in the classroom, with no student earning a GPA below 3.8, while six attained 4.0 or better. One student, Danielle Cox of Sacred Hearts Academy, was among just 20 students in the entire State to receive the coveted Regents Scholarship for Academic Excellence.

“This is a very impressive group of students, which represents the type of individuals that we created this scholarship for to recognize and reward,” said Chancellor Rose Tseng. “We are delighted that they have chosen to attend UH Hilo.”

For the first time this fall, the incoming scholars program will include a special Honors class. “Honors Colloquium” is an intensive course in reading, writing and thinking about major issues emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.

“This class will allow the Chancellor’s Scholars to meet all of UH Hilo’s vice chancellors and academic deans and learn about their scholarship and research endeavors firsthand,” said Dr. Luoluo Hong, vice chancellor for student affairs and coordinating instructor. “It’s a chance for our most academically promising students to be intellectually challenged and hopefully inspired!”
