For Immediate Release

A cast of University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College students will perform Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues on Saturday, February 3, 7:30 p.m., at the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center.

The production, which is directed by Elle Bublitz, a UH Hilo women’s study major, is a benefit as part of the global V-Day Initiative to stop the violence against women and girls. This year’s global spotlight monologue, “Reclaiming Peace,” highlights the lives and work of women attempting to rebuild in conflict zones around the world.

A Hilo production of The Vagina Monologues last year raised over $3,000 to support the S.A.R.A.H. Foundation in Puna. The foundation was named in honor of Sarah Faye, who was killed as a result of battering. This year’s production will benefit the UH Hilo Women’s Center in its work on campus to reduce violence against women, provide a safe space for victims, and assist with new educational programming on these issues for college-age women and men.

Since its inception in 1998, V-Day has raised over $25 million for local communities both in the United States and around the world, and has generated increased media coverage and public awareness about violence against women. The V-Day Initiative supports efforts to end violence against women by helping to change lives, laws, political perspectives and individual hearts and minds. Positive outcomes of the V-Day Initiative include the building of shelters in countries that practice FGM (female genital mutilation) and education for girls and women about their own bodies.

Tickets are available through the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center Box Office, the UH Hilo Women’s Center and CD Wizard. Tickets are $10 general and $6 students/seniors.
