For Immediate Release

Dr. Reni Ivanova, associate professor of mathematics at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, has been invited to give a 60-minute presentation on her innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Students’ Success Through Enhanced Math Program (STEM SSTEM) at the OnCourse National Conference 2007, March 2-3 in Dallas, Texas. UH Hilo’s first cohort of STEM SSTEM students has finished its first semester and the reviews for the program are excellent.

“This is recognition of the outstanding work that our STEM SSTEM program is doing,” said UH Hilo Chancellor Dr. Rose Tseng. “They’re giving students a wonderful opportunity to the exciting world of the natural sciences and to better prepare for their challenges.”

Ivanova will present the “enhanced math” curriculum she designed to provide a theoretical and practical approach to calculus by integrating the concepts and applications of physics and astronomy and other natural sciences so that students learn the connections between math and science.

“OnCourse is an organization devoted to student retention and success,” said Dr. Randy Hirokawa, dean of UH Hilo’s College of Arts and Sciences. “Their invitation for Reni to speak is an acknowledgement that the kind of student-centered attention this program will provide STEM students will not only enrich their education experience here at UH Hilo, but also maximize their success in their major.”
