Parker Ranch historian to speak at NHERC

Dr. Billy Bergin, a local historian authoring a series on the history of Parker Ranch, will speak at the University of Hawaii at Hilo North Hawai`i Education and Research Center (NHERC) in Honoka`a on Wednesday, November 8 at 6:00 p.m. His presentation, “Loyal to the Land: The Legendary Parker Ranch,” is sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at NHERC. The talk is free and open to the public.
Bergin served as Parker Ranch’s veterinarian for 25 years until his retirement in 1995. Since then he has been researching the history of the Ranch. The first volume was published in 2003 followed by the second volume in hardcover this past September.
In his talk, Bergin will discuss the important Hispanic vaquero roots of ranching in Hawai`i, and the histories of the five foundation families. The balance of his discussion will examine each aspect of Parker Ranch development along with its role and influence on the Island and State of Hawai`i.
