For Immediate Release

Dr. William W. Steiner, Dean of the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management (CAFNRM), recently announced that David K. Bishaw, a CAFNRM senior has been awarded the 11th Annual Frederick K. T. Tom Memorial Scholarship.

The award was established in 1995 in memory of the first Dean of the UH Hilo College of Agriculture, later renamed CAFNRM, to assist full-time students in the completion of their studies. Dr. Tom served as Dean of the College from 1976 to 1981, and passed away in June 1993. Tom’s widow Nancy was on hand to join Steiner in presenting Bishaw with the scholarship check, which totals $500.

“Although I never met Dr. Tom, I’ve been inspired by his life story and his wife’s tireless efforts to help students achieve their dream of a college education,” Bishaw said. “To be chosen for this scholarship is a great honor, for which I am deeply grateful. And to receive it at the age of 41 makes it that much sweeter.”

Bishaw was selected to receive the scholarship based on his scholastic achievements. Current plans call for him to graduate in Spring 2007 with a Bachelors degree in Agriculture specializing in Tropical Horticulture, and pursue a Master’s Degree in Tropical Conservation. He hopes to eventually own and operate a native endemic plant nursery on his home island of Moloka’i.
