Assistant Fiscal Officer Jo-Ann Nishioka has been named Administrative Affairs’ Employee of the Quarter at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Nishioka is a familiar face in the UH Hilo Business Office, having started there in 1989 as an account clerk.
“Jo-Ann is a very committed employee and always looks at the big picture, the UH Hilo campus, Administrative Affairs and the Business office,” wrote her nominator. “She does not look only at the duties outlined in her position description but will look at all the ways that she can contribute to our campus. She has participated in many committees, providing input from the knowledge she’s gained in her 16 years of employment at the Business Office. She is an excellent team player and a great asset to our campus, division and department.”
According to the nominator, Nishioka approaches her job in an innovative way.
“Jo-Ann was assigned the task of implementing the purchasing card for UH Hilo. She was responsible for organizing mandatory training sessions held at the UH Hilo campus and worked closely with the UH Procurement Office on policy and procedure issues. It was necessary for Jo-Ann to establish a review and filing system that would stand up to audit. Since the implementation of the P-card, both the number of cardholders and number of transactions have increased dramatically. This program has been a success on our campus largely due to the commitment and hard work of Jo-Ann.”
Nishioka says she enjoys her job and finds her on-the-job learning experiences at UH Hilo especially rewarding.
“It's great working with the people in the office as well and with my counterparts on the other UH campuses,” she noted. “I was so surprised as this was unexpected and I believe there are many others that are deserving of this award.”
