For Immediate Release

A Night in the Stacks 2005: Leis of Aloha with Marie McDonald and Friends raised approximately $28,000 for the University of Hawaii at Hilo Edwin H. Mookini Library. All funds raised at the third annual event will provide vital support for the collections and programs of the Library, which serves UH Hilo, Hawai‘i Community College and the Big Island community.

“I am gratified by the community support for the Mookini Library,” said UH Hilo Chancellor Dr. Rose Tseng. “As the main repository of knowledge and information, the Library provides the heartbeat of the University. We exceeded our goal by about $8,000. We want to thank everybody involved for making this event a rousing success.”

Tseng served as a co-host of the event with Dr. Rockne Freitas, chancellor of Hawai‘i Community College and Esther “Kiki” Mookini, wife of the late UH Hilo Chancellor Edwin H. Mookini. Mrs. Mookini also received the 2005 Friend of the Year Award from the Friends of the Edwin H. Mookini Library. Honorary chairs for A Night in the Stacks 2005 were former University of Hawai‘i President Dr. Fujio Matsuda, former UH Hilo Librarian Ken Herrick, Durrant-Media Five
Principal Russell Oda and former Hawai‘i Tribune-Herald Editor Eugene Tao.

A special account has been created with Atlas Recycling so that refunds can be contributed to the Mookini Library. Those wishing to support the Mookini Library can also do so year-round through the “Adopt-a-Book” program. To Adopt-A-Book in memory of a loved one or to commemorate a special occasion, contact Dr. Linda Golian-Lui at golianlu@hawaii.edu or (808) 933-3132 for more details.
