For Immediate Release
The Departments of English and Linguistics at the University University of Hawaii at Hilo announces that a certificate program in Teaching English as a Second Language will begin again in Fall 2005. The 18-credit program is designed for students with an interest in teaching English as a Second Language either abroad or in a wide range of educational settings in the United States.
English or Linguistic majors will find the Certificate Program a useful adjunct to their baccalaureate training, as will students pursuing other majors who are interested in working in other countries. Current or prospective elementary or secondary teachers will also find this program a useful addition to their professional credentials.
The program offers students a theoretical foundation and practical tools for teaching English as a Second Language. Coursework includes the study of general linguistics, the English language, language acquisition, English as a Second Language materials and methods, and a supervised practicum.
While some of the courses in the program are taught every semester, the full program will be offered over three semesters beginning Fall 2005.
