UH Hilo Brown Bag series continues with Changzoo Song Oct. 28

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo English Department invites the public to hear Changzoo Song, Ph.D. as part of its October Brown Bag series Tuesday, October 28, noon – 1 p.m., University Classroom Building Room 127. Song presents “From Alienation to Belonging: Asian Journeys in Aotearoa.” Light refreshments will be served.

Song is an associate professor in Asian and Korean Studies at the University of Auckland, New Zealand where his teaching and research focus on migration and diaspora studies. His presentation will focus on Asian communities in New Zealand, including European views of the land and its people. His work has been published in journals such as Asian Ethnicities, Journal of Chinese Overseas, European Journal of Korean Studies, and Journal of Korean History. His most recent book, Acculturation of Korean New Zealander Youth: Re-Ethnicization of the Newer Generation, was published this year.

He is the principal investigator for a number of grants to integrate and expand identity, culture and diaspora studies in the Korean and Asian Studies Department at the University of Auckland, and provide educational opportunities for students. Song has a Bachelor of Arts from Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea, a Master’s degree from Hangkuk University in Seoul, South Korea, and a doctorate from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa while an East-West Center Fellow in Political Science and Asian Studies. Before joining the faculty at the University of Auckland in 2002, he taught at universities in Latvia and Ukraine.
