For Immediate Release
Chantelle Clifford, a sophomore attending the University of Hawai`i at Hilo , has been awarded a scholarship by Oxfam America to represent the State of Hawai`i at the national conference of the Campus Opportunity Outreach League (COOL), being held March 12-14, 2003 in Cleveland, Ohio. Clifford will help conference organizers facilitate a Hunger Banquet in order to educate college students across the country about hunger issues. She will also travel to the University of Hawai`i at Manoa this summer to assist the campus staff with their own Hunger Banquet.
The scholarship was the second Oxfam award for Clifford, who was chosen for a full scholarship from a national pool of college applicants to attend the organization's CHANGE Conference held last summer in Boston, Massachusetts. Both awards are based upon her scholastic record and campus involvement. Upon returning from the Boston conference, she launched a new student organization at UH Hilo called, "Freedom From Hunger," which educates, advocates and promotes service addressing local and global hunger.
Last fall, Clifford and her student volunteers sponsored a Hunger Banquet on the UH Hilo campus, which included a food drive for the Hawai`i Island Food Bank. The Hunger Banquet is a nationwide event that takes place one week before Thanksgiving, and offers a visual portrayal of food access worldwide.
For more than 30 years, Oxfam has been a leader in creating lasting solutions to global poverty, hunger and injustice.
