The So-shin Kai will be honoring their late leader, Shizuko Akamine, with a performance that will feature some of her students as well as local guest performers (sanshin, dance, voice) who have supported her and the So-shin Kai in the past. Current leader, Darin Miyashiro, has been working through the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Apprenticeship Program to sustain the group. Miyashiro teaches koto at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa Music Department and is pursuing his master’s degree in ethnomusicology.
The event is sponsored by the Kinzo and Fumiko Nishimura Japanese Cultural Fund.
