Free Okinawan koto performance at `Imiloa

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawai╩╗i at Hilo invites the public to a free Okinawan koto performance at the `Imiloa Astronomy CenterÔÇÖs Moanahoku Room on Sunday, July 19 from 3-4 pm.

The So-shin Kai will be honoring their late leader, Shizuko Akamine, with a performance that will feature some of her students as well as local guest performers (sanshin, dance, voice) who have supported her and the So-shin Kai in the past. Current leader, Darin Miyashiro, has been working through the Hawai╩╗i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Apprenticeship Program to sustain the group. Miyashiro teaches koto at the University of Hawai╩╗i at Manoa Music Department and is pursuing his masterÔÇÖs degree in ethnomusicology.
