UH Hilo celebrates Filipino-American Heritage Month

The public is invited to celebrate Filipino-American Heritage Month at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo with a series of events during October. The event is a nationwide observance throughout the U.S. to recognize Filipino-Americans, their historical advancement and contributions to the nation.
UH Hilo’s celebration kicks off with “Barrio Fiesta” on Thursday, October 2, 10:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on the Campus Center Plaza. The event captures the mood of a traditional Filipino fiesta celebration in a festive gathering of special guests, administration, politicians, community members, students, faculty and staff who will begin the opening ceremonies with a parade of colorful Filipino costumes. The event will also feature food and entertainment.
Other events during the month-long celebration include:
* October 16. Academic Forum with Dr. Patricia Brown.
1) Discovering the Hidden Stories of the Plantation Era Filipinas.
12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m. Student Services Center, Room 201.
2) FILIPINAS! Voices from Daughters and Descendants of Hawai’i’s
Plantation Era. 6-7:30 p.m. UCB Room 100.
* October 23. Film viewing: “Documented” with Jose Antonio Vargas.
5 p.m. UCB Room 100.
* October 26. Hilo Filipino Fiesta. 10 – 3 p.m. (Subject to change)
Mo’oheau Park Bandstand and Grounds. Sponsored by County of
Hawai’i, Downtown Improvement Association, Connections Charter
* October 29. “Drizzle” – A showcase of traditional dances with a modern
twist by UH Hilo and Hawai’i Community College students. 6:30 p.m. Hale Kehau turnaround.
All events are free and organized by the Filipino Advisory Committee together with the Filipino Certificate Studies Group, Bayanihan Club and the Filipino community.
