For Immediate Release

Four students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo were recently awarded scholarships by the UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association.

Holo Ho’opai, a Hilo High School graduate and former student of the Hawaiian language immersion school Ke Kula O Nāwahīokalani‘ōpuʻu, is pursuing a master’s degree in Hawaiian language and literature. After earning his degree, he intends to seek admission to a doctoral program or law school.

Jodie Schulten graduated from Bear Creek High School in Colorado and is seeking a master’s in Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Sciences. She says her passion for preserving native species in Hawaiʻi’s lowland wet forests will be the driving force in her post-graduate pursuits.

Melissa Sullivan is a graduate of Pahoa High School. She received her BS in Nursing in 2007 and is a member of the inaugural class in the Doctorate of Nursing Program being launched this fall.

Lissa Tsutsumi graduated from Hilo High School and is currently a senior at UH Hilo. Her ultimate educational goal is to earn a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. She plans to pursue a career formulating the next generation of pharmaceuticals and “cosmeceuticals.”

This is the eighth year the UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association has awarded scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students with alumni ties to the University. The scholarships are made possible by money raised through the Distinguished Alumni and Service Awards Banquet, Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament, and donations from the community.
