A panel of experts in scientific research, medicine, public health and agriculture discusses “Rat Lungworm Disease: What DO We Know?” on Wednesday, November 9, 6-8 p.m., at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Pharmacy, Room LPLH2, 722 South Aohoku Street in the University Park of Science and Technology. The forum is free and open to the public.

Rat lungworm disease, which resides in the pulmonary arteries of rats, is transferred to humans when roundworm larvae from infected snails or slugs are ingested. This rare parasitic infection can be potentially devastating when transferred to humans, leading to coma, agonizing pain and worse infections.

Dr. Sue Jarvi, UH Hilo College of Pharmacy, serves as moderator.

The forum is a public service by the UH Hilo College of Pharmacy, and sponsored by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the US Department of Agriculture, UH Manoa, and Big Island Global HOPE.

The presentation will be recorded and made available to the public. For more information, call Dr. Noelie Rodriguez at 963-6966 or Dr. Sue Jarvi at 933-2954.
