College of Pharmacy marks pharmacist month with Health Fair, White Coat Ceremony

To honor American Pharmacist Month, the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo College of Pharmacy presents its third annual Health Fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, October 16 at the UH Hilo Campus Center.
Students and faculty will conduct activities that promote healthy living, such as a "brown bag” medication check as well as blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings. Students also are preparing sunscreen samples to be given away with College of Pharmacy faculty member Mimi Pezzuto. Other activities also include a diabetes cooking lesson at 9 a.m., yoga demonstration at 10 a.m., and a zumba class at 11 a.m.
Later that day, 92 pharmacy students from the class of 2015 will recite the Oath of a Pharmacist at the College of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. in the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center.
The ceremony is a rite of passage for students entering their first year in the professional program to affirm their commitment to professionalism, respect, integrity and caring. Speakers include UH Hilo Chancellor Donald Straney and Pat DeLeon, Chief of Staff for Senator Daniel K. Inouye. Also speaking will be Nancy Huang, Walgreens district pharmacy supervisor for Hawaiʻi, and CoP Preceptor of the Year Miles Nakatsu, RPh, from Ululani Pharmacy. The event is sponsored by Walgreens.
