For Immediate Release

The University of Hawai╩╗i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association has announced that Jade Miyashiro, Wainohia Lum-Ho and Megan Venegas have become the latest recipients of the AssociationÔÇÖs annual scholarship award.

Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 with selections based upon academic merit and financial need. Applicants must also be or have an immediate family member who is a UH Hilo alumnus.

Miyashiro, a graduate of Hilo High School, is currently a sophomore at UH Hilo majoring in agriculture, who cares very deeply about the environment and sustainability. Her goal is to help local farmers boost productivity and improve the nutritional value of their crops. She would also like to improve agricultural methods and output to help Hawai╩╗i become more self-sufficient as well as reduce sources of pollution.

Lum-Ho, a first-generation college student with a strong drive to succeed, also graduated from Hilo High School and is currently a UH Hilo senior majoring in performing arts. Her long term goal is to become a performing arts professor at the University. She also wants to create a drama therapy program for children whose parents are incarcerated, which gives the children a positive outlet and a safe environment to express their feelings.

Venegas graduated from Waiakea High School and UH Hilo, where she earned her B.A. in biology and a minor in chemistry. She is currently in the final year of the Pharm.D. program at the UniversityÔÇÖs College of Pharmacy. Her goal is to specialize in pediatric pharmacy because of the challenges and strong job demand in that profession.

A total of 22 alumni scholarships have been awarded since 2004. The UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association organizes two signature events annually to fund the scholarships. The Distinguished Alumni and Service Awards Banquet held each spring includes a silent auction component to raise scholarship funds. The Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament, initiated in 2004, is held each fall, and will take place this year on October 22 at the Waikoloa KingÔÇÖs Course.

If anyone would like to help raise scholarship funds or wish to participate in the golf tournament, call (808) 974-7501 or (808) 974-7643 or go online at https://hilo.hawaii.edu/alumni/.
