For Immediate Release
Journalist and playwright Lee Cataluna will read from her first novel, Three Years on Doreen's Sofa, at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, October 4 at 7 p.m. The reading is free and open to the public. Cataluna also will present a free playwriting workshop the same day, from 2-4 p.m. in the Green Room of the Center. Participants will read scenes and also write.
Three Years on Doreen’s Sofa is the story of Bobby and his wildly misguided attempts to go straight after serving three years in jail for a drug-related offense. His sister Doreen lets him stay on her sofa until he gets his life back together. Cataluna also will read from her first book, Folks You Meet in Longs, which was staged at the UHHPAC last year.
Cataluna was born on Maui and raised in plantation houses in Wailuku, Kōloa, and Ka‘u. She is now a graduate student in Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside. After working for ten years in local television and radio, she became a columnist for The Honolulu Advertiser, and currently writes for the Honolulu StarAdvertiser.
