For Immediate Release

This year’s recipient of the Audrey S. Furukawa (ASF) Study Abroad Scholarship will be making extensive use of her luggage and passport this fall. Ms. Evailaufaumalu Sala, who received the $2,000 award in April to participate in the Semester at Sea (SAS) Program, will be visiting 12 countries, including Cuba, Morocco and India.

The ASF Study Abroad Scholarship was created to provide a University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo student the opportunity to study abroad, and requires awardees to maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA. Sala, the third recipient of the award, is a junior majoring in Economics with a minor in Business Administration and carries a 3.43 GPA. She was born in American Samoa and raised in Western Samoa.

Sala said one of her main reasons for selecting the Semester at Sea Program is “the opportunity given SAS students to make a difference in the lives of others – for example, to build shelters as well as work with children in orphanages in Cape Town, South Africa.” She also noted that “the ASF Scholarship offers UH Hilo students the chance to be a diplomat representing the University.” Sala hopes her study abroad experience will inspire other UH Hilo students, including her minority peers from Polynesia, Micronesia, Asia and first-generation students, to believe they can also study abroad.

Studying abroad helps support the newly adopted UH Hilo Strategic Plan’s goal of providing learning experiences to prepare students in their professional and personal lives. All UH Hilo students are eligible to study abroad, providing they meet the minimum qualifications.
