University Radio Hilo is the student-run, college radio for UH Hilo. The station provides opportunities for students to gain experience working in a radio station and explore their creativity through music, news and special programming. The Board of Media Broadcasting (BOMB) oversees media broadcast fees, which, in part, funds the radio station each year.
For the past two decades, URH has been evolving, technologically, to provide students with better listening access but also to increasingly improve the hands-on experience with equip- ment, sound quality, content, and accessibility.
In 2002, URH could be listened to through the internet. But, in 2006, the radio station be- came an AM station. Eventually the station applied for an FM license, which was granted in February of 2014. As years went by the station moved from the HCC campus to the UH Hilo campus, where state-of-the-art studio boxes were constructed in the station’s new office. This year, an additional box was added to the office to meet the expansion needs of students, as well as the necessity for social distancing brought on by COVID-19. The most exciting ac- complishment for the station occurred in March of 2021, when the station began internet streaming. Last year’s General Manager Michael Taylor helped get the station online and facilitated the large increase in the station’s listenership. Now students can listen to the station live from wherever they are.
Tune in to 101.1 FM while in the Hilo area to listen to URH. You can also Google “URH” and listen live on the internet stream.
Any UH Hilo student can join the team that runs the campus’ radio station, and there are no requirements for becoming a DJ. As outgoing General Manager Caroline Karson stated,
“Students just need to have an interest in music to apply for the role of a DJ. DJs can play any music that would fit in their respective show genres, as long as it is non-explicit. DJs are encouraged to play a variety of music so that the station is diverse and appeals to the vari- ous music preferences of the UH Hilo community.”
If you would like to join the team of DJs, you can apply at the office in Campus Center 313 or go to the URH website and apply online.
