Letter from the Editor in Chief

For those of you who’ve been attempting to reach Ke Kalahea via email, e kala mai! Our account, managed by the UH system, recently ran into technical difficulties that rendered us unable to access our emails. We are working with campus IT to remedy the situation, and will update you accordingly once all communication functions have been restored.

As for this issue, our staff has been hard at work to provide up-to-date information on campus news and other current events. With Halloween just around the corner, a feeling of spookiness seems to be creeping upon us. One of our writers, Lexi, knows this feeling well; her story on clowns will send a shiver down your spine. If Halloween is less about scary monsters and more about throwing epic parties, perhaps you’ll want to head down to Haili Street next Monday. Another writer, Gina, previews the Palace Theater’s annual Rocky Horror Picture Show screening – an event which is sure to invite a motley crew of fans eager to dress up and throw food at a big screen.
Aside from the festivities at hand, Ke Kalahea seeks to provide a serious forum for debate, where a meaningful exchange of ideas can take place. Our writer Valentina sought out anti-TMT voices, for instance, in the second installment of her story on the future of Maunakea.
Our News Editor, Aspen, meanwhile, introduces the first installment of her own story, this time on potentially wide-ranging budget cuts affecting those who live, study, or work at UH Hilo. Even in eco-friendly Hawai‘i, the battle for green doesn’t always refer to the environment. For those who do wish to talk about ‘āina, however, our writer Nick recounts his visit to a Honoka‘a farm, whose owner shares her thoughts on how to make a living in agriculture in the 21st century.
In a brand new addition to our publication, Ke Kalahea is debuting “Ask Aunty,” an advice column on whatever you – the reader – wish to ask us! We look forward to featuring additional questions and comments from the UH Hilo community in future issues, so keep it up!
As for the next issue, however, I’m going to give you a fair warning: politics will be covered, and lots of it. With our sixth issue hitting stands on Monday, Nov. 7, we are looking for student input on what political issues should be addressed – whether at the county, state, or federal level. If you wish to contribute an article to our next issue, or speak with one of our writers on a story pertaining to politics, we encourage you to stop by the office, or email BOSP.
Until then, we hope you enjoy a ghoulish All Hallows’ Eve. Just don’t let the Trumpkins bite!
