- Summary:
- Approximately fifty Hawaiian honeycreepers or Palila (Drepaidinae), were moved from the west slope of Mauna Kea to the northern slope of Mauna Kea in an effort to take the pressure off the western slope population and to hedge against a local catastrophe such as a fire that might damage a large area of habitat or kill many birds. This document describes the events that caused the reduction of the mamane (Sophora chrysophylla) forest, as well as the threats and predation that have reduced this once common and widespread species down to the last two thousand birds.
