- Summary:
- This project description was prepared by Townscape, Inc., Honolulu, Hawaii, for the University of Hawaii, Institute for Astronomy. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), in collaboration with scientific agencies from the United Kingdom, Canada and other partners (yet to be determined), proposes to construct the Gemini Northern 8-Meter Telescope at the summit ridge of Mauna Kea between the existing UH88-inch Telescope and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. In addition to the telescope itself, the installation would include the rotating telescope enclosure and attached buildings housing the control facility, the mechanical systems facility and the reflective coating plant. The construction and operating characteristics of the Gemini Telescope will be similar to those assessed in the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the National New Technology Telescope (NNTT), which was the name originally given to the project when it was conceived about twenty years ago. To accommodate the construction workers, four additional eight-person cabins will be added to the construction camp at Hale Pohaku (plans included).
