Summary:
When the generators at the summit of Mauna Kea and at the temporary base camp at Hale Pohaku were found to be unsatisfactory, the University of Hawaii initiated a "Power to Summit" project to develop an appropriate electrical and telephone system. The project area selected was along the Mauna Kea Access Road from the Saddle Road to Mauna Kea Summit located in the districts of North Hilo and Hamakua on the Island of Hawaii. The location is identified by Tax Map Key: 3-8-01:2 & 9 and Tax Map Key: 4-4-15:1. The system will require the installation of power poles, overhead lines, and the construction of a substation near the Humuula Sheep Station that will require transformers and appurtenances on a concrete pad in a 20,000 square foot site that will be fenced in with a 6 foot high chain link fence topped with barb wire. Telephone service will be provided by a microwave system that will probably require 50-foot towers at the Humuula Repeater Station and the Mid Elevation Facility (MEF) together with receivers and appurtenances as well as an easement for the tower. The consulting firm of Nakamura, Kawabata and Associates, Inc., which worked closely with the Hilo Electric Company and Hawaiian Telephone Company, was retained to assist in the development and analysis of the alternatives and estimates.
