- Summary:
- This Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is concerned with the on-going operations of the existing University of Hawaii (UH) telescopes, the construction of two new telescopes; the Infrared Telescope Facilities (IRTF) and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) and the operations of those facilities located above the 13,000 foot elevation on Mauna Kea, Island of Hawaii. The only truly irreversible changes due to the present operations and construction of the IRTF and UKIRT are represented in the use of land area near Hilo for solid waste disposal, the depletion of non-renewable resources and alteration of soil structure. Changes in scenic quality, landform and surface water are presumably not irreversible if all structures are removed in the future and the site is put in its original condition.
