Summary:
The proposed Mauna Kea Observatory Mid Elevation Facility (MEF) is located off Humuula-Hale Pohaku Road in Humuula, North Hilo, Hawaii, more particularly identified as Tax Map Key: 3-8-01:7 portion. The proposed site is approximately 40 acres within an approximately 20,370-acre site owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL). The placement of the facilities will be made to minimize social, economical, and environmental impacts wherever possible and all work shall be performed in accordance with applicable regulations. While the development of the MEF will create some water, noise and air pollution during the construction phases, these undesirable effects will be minimized through the enforcement of the Department of Health's (DOH) and the Department of Accounting and General Services' control regulations.
