- Summary:
- In 2001, 2003, and 2005, students from the University of Hawaii at Hilo archaeological field schools conducted a regional survey, mapping, and preliminary testing of various sites in the area of Keanakolu, ("the three caves"), that is located between the 5, 300 ft. and 6,400 ft. elevation on the slopes of Mauna Kea near the border of the North Hilo and Hamakua Districts. The overall anthropological focus was to consider how foreign immigrants fused their cultural practices with indigenous social structures to create a new form of subsistence and livelihood and the upper mountain, giving rise to the celebrated paniolo ranching culture of Hawaii. This document includes artifact photos taken during the study such as the Stone Corral Complex, glass bottles, containers, and various other items.
