Summary:
The Palila (Psittirostra bailleui) a finch-billed member of the endemic Hawaiian honeycreeper family (Drepanididae) that received federal recognition as an endangered species in 1966 because: (1) it no longer occupied a significant portion of its historical range; (2) its present habitat was being adversely modified by feral sheep browsing; and (3) the total Palila population at that time was estimated to be in the low hundreds. This report describes the reasons for the species decline, the life history and population dynamics, the habitat requirements, mortality factors, the recovery plan outline, the habitat protection and management, a schedule of priorities and responsibilities, and the estimated costs for the recovery plan.
