Summary:
Hawaiian dark-rumped petrel (Pterodroma phaeopygia sandwichensis) was first described in 1884. This report summarized the exhaustive search and related statements on relative abundance and geographical distribution from 1862 to 1978. Substantial colonies once known on Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, and Hawaii were disappeared. The long-term natural survival of P. P. sandwichensis depends essentially upon maintaining the vitality of the largest remaining subpopulation within Haleakala National Park on Maui.
