Elepaio Champiempis sandwichensis Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge
Summary:
This study describes all plumages and molts of Hawaii Elepaio, (Chasiempis sandwichensis), a monarch flycatcher that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It compares tests hypotheses for the evolution of delayed plumage maturation, studies the behavior toward models representing different ages and sexes, examines the effects of habitat disturbance and disease demography of Hawaii, and investigates the distribution of the poxvirus (Avipoxvirus sp.) in the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge with regard to the evidence of population reduction and recovery. The results of this study further illustrate the importance to native Hawaiian birds of high elevation forests as refuges from mosquito-borne disease. The graphs, tables, and the conclusions of this study as well as the future work that is planned are also given in this report.
