This document describes the species of birds that are now extinct due to hunting by man and the predation by introduced mamals (rats, and perhaps pigs and dogs). The possibility of prehistorically introduced diseases and habitat destruction may also be reasons for the extinction of these birds that are listed as follows: Pterodroma jugabilis, Apteribis brevis, Chelychelynechen, Chelychelynechen quassus, Thambetochen xanion, Ptaiochen, Ptaiochen pau, Branta hylobadistes, Porzana ziegleri, Porzana menehune, Porzana keplerorum, Porzana ralphorum, Porzana severnsi, Circus dossenus, Grallistrix, Grallistrix auceps, Grallistrix orion, Grallistrix geleches, Grallistrix rdmani, Corvus impluviatus, Corvus viriosus, Telespiza persecutrix, Telespiza ypsilon, Chloridops wahi, Chloridops regiskongi, Orthiospiza, Orthiospiza howarthi, Xestospiza, Xestospiza conica, Xestisouza fastigialis, Hemignathus upupirostris, Vangulifer, Vangulifer mirandus, Vangulifer neophasis, Aidemedia, Aidemedia chascax, Aidemedia zanclops, Aidemedia lutetiae, Ciridops tenax. The study of these fossils, the five main Hawaiian islands that were inhabited by these birds, (Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and Hawaii), the methods that were used in the study, and photographs of the bones that were discovered are included in this document.
