This article describes a CPEMR Conference field trip from Hilo to Kona that began at the Hilo Lagoon Hotel, through the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and on to Kona, via Highway 11. The journey took the visitors to or past various areas of the Volcano such as to the National Park's Visitor Center, on a drive around the Kilauea Caldera on Crater Rim Drive, to a stop at the Steaming Bluffs and the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, on to a ride around Kilauea's Southwest Rift Zone, on a walk to an observation platform on Halemaumau's edge, past sulphur deposits, to a stop at the Keanakakoi Crater, down the Chain of Craters Road to Puhimau Crater, on a ride along the center of Kilauea's East Rift Zone, and to a stop at Pauahi Crater. The buses then retraced their route back up the East Rift Zone, to Crater Rim Drive, around the caldera, to a stop at the Thurston Lava Tube, to the Kilauea Iki Overlook, to lunch at the historic Volcano House, and onto the West side of Kona via Highway 11. Included is a description of areas that were seen at various mile posts along the way.
