Summary:
Description of Mauna Kea mamane-naio forest as one of the important bird areas. It is a dry, high elevation (6,600 to 9,400 feet) forest and shrubland, dominated by mamane (Sophora chrysophylla) and naio (Myoporum snadwicense). It is the habitat for Palila and several other endemic birds including Hawaii Amakihi, Apapane, Elepaio, and Iiwi, as well as Hawaiian Short-eared Owl (Pueo).
