The book includes information on Hawaii as an Ornithological field, the obstacles to Ornithological studies in the Hawaiian Islands, the destruction of Hawaiian forests, the environmental changes disastrous to the Hawaiian birds, the faunal zones, the effect on native birds due to the presence of the Mynah bird, diseases of Hawaiian birds, the origin of the Hawaiian birds, the ornithological knowledge of Hawaiian natives, as well as the history of ornithological investigations in the islands. The author's field experience is restricted mostly to the windward side of the Island of Hawaii, the largest and most extensively forested of the group. In the case of species that were not observed by the author, the published accounts of Wilson, Rothschild and Perkins was used as a reference. The author described every species observed in the islands. Descriptions of these birds may be brief but will suffice for the identification of the birds.
