Summary:
Ohia is the most common and widespread native tree in Hawaii. Recently, extensive ohia mortality has been observed in the Puna District of Hawaii Island in previously healthy trees growing in undisturbed forest settings. Affected trees exhibit rapid, synchronized death of leaves on individual branches that eventually spreads to the entire canopy. Pathogenicity tests have determined that the causal agent of the disease is the vascular wilt fungus, Ceratocystis fimbriata.
