Summary:
While engaged in astronomical observations in the Hawaiian Islands in 1891-92, in cooperation with the work of the International Geodetic Association, occasion was taken to make a continuous study for one year of the force of gravity at Waikiki. Afterwards an expedition was undertaken to the summit of Mauna Kea to determine the force of gravity at the base and summit, from which the density of the mountain and the mean density of the earth might be deduced.
