Summary:
This is a summary of the extensive report of the National New Technology Telescope (NNTT) Site Evaluation Project, which was carried out between March 1984 and March 1986. The testing provided a detailed comparison of the characteristics of Mount Graham (Arizona) and Mauna Kea (Hawaii). On the basis of the tests summarized in this report, the Director of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) recommended that Mauna Kea be selected as the site for the 15-meter class optical/infrared NNTT. The recommendation was accepted by the Executive Committee of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) Board of Directors on March 18, 1987.
