- Summary:
- The authors conducted surveys of passerines during 1998-2011 in subalpine woodland habitat on Mauna Kea Volcano, Island of Hawaii. Drought conditions during the period and sustained browsing by introduced ungulates all contributed to the decline of the palila population by reducing the mamane seed pod crop. Eliminating feral ungulates and long-term monitoring the palila population trends are necessary in conservation of the endangered species.
