Summary:
The authors mist netted birds at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, Mauna Kea, Hawaii Island, from 1987-2006. It was found that the population declines of Hawaii akepa due to food limitation was related to the increase of Japanese white-eye. Therefore, white-eye control is critical in avoiding the extinction of Hawaii akepa.
