Summary:
In the Hawaiian Islands the genus Sophora is represented only by one species, Sophora chrysophylla. This species which has two varieties, Sophora chrysophylla glabrata and Sophora chrysophylla unifoliata, mamani, is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The object of this research is to determine the molecular structure of at least one of the unknown alkaloids of S. chrysophylla by spectroscopic methods. The structure of pohakuline was later investigated to find structural similarities to mamanine.
