- Summary:
- The reconnaissance covers the Pohakuloa Training Area Tank-Trail (PTA T-T) route from the Western Boundary to Kawaihae Harbor, Army Ramp. The present Tank Trail, a 25 foot wide roadway and corridor, is leased on a short term basis from a variety of owners, both private and public. It passes through the Districts of Hamakua, North Kona and South Kohala in the County of Hawaii. The objective of the reconnaissance was to identify any cultural resources/historic or archaeological properties that were on, or are eligible to be on the State of National Registers of Historic Places, or to identify properties that required further investigation so such determination of eligibility could be made. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that no further intensive archaeological data recovery studies be required for the proposed renewal of leases for the presently used T-T corridor. There were no features of apparent National Register - Level Significance that will be affected by continued use of the route as currently laid out. Some consideration of providing a future alternate routing in the area of the proposed State Highway 19, near Puu Pa should be made. Continued use of the existing route will require four crossings of the new highway in a distance of just over one mile.
