Summary:
European Southern Observatory will build four 25.6-foot-diameter telescopes in Chile, called Very Large Telescope. Each mirror will be 7-inch thick, like a soft phonograph record, supported by levers used to change the mirror's shape to compensate for factors that can warp the mirror's surface. On Mauna Kea, Japan's national telescope and US's national telescope, NNTT, are expected to be built in the mid-1990s. Japanese women astronomer, Saeko Hayashi, has been awarded a fellowship by the Joint Astronomy Centre.
