Summary:
This report was prepared by International Archaeological Research Institute, Inc. for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an overview of cultural resources on the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge (HFNWR), located on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. The purpose of this overview is to 1) produce a background and synthesis of known cultural resources in and near the HFNWR, 2) identify the kinds of cultural resources likely to occur in the refuge, 3) identify which areas in the refuge are likely to contain these resources, and 4) prepare a context within which to evaluate the eligibility of refuge cultural resources to the National Register of Historic Places. Recommendations for management of cultural resources are also made.
